Your Costa Rica adventure begins! One of our representatives will meet you at the Juan Santamaria International Airport to take you to the hotel.
Depending on the time of your flight, you will have some free time to enjoy optional tours in the capital city San Jose or its surroundings.

Overnight at Bougainvillea Hotel.

Optional tour, not included in the price (if your flight arrives really early in the morning)
  •  Poas Volcano National Park
Poas Volcano is one of the most popular Costa Rica attractions. As it is located really close to the international airport and the San Jose hotels, even the people who don’t have much time in their itinerary can visit this National Park. On the way, enjoy beautiful landscapes decorated with picturesque local restaurants, farms and crops.

Or if you prefer, you can make a self-guided walk tour through the gardens. The beautiful gardens of Bougainvillea hotel have been recognized several times for being an excellent place to observe several bird species, as well as several hummingbird species.

San Gerardo de Dota is known as one of the top destinations for birdwatchers in Costa Rica due to the numbers of bird species inhabit (around 200 species). Also, it’s one of the most beautiful regions in the country with stunning green hills and fruit plantations.

Early pick up from your hotel. Admire the biodiversity of an astonishing protected area in Costa Rica as the bus drives through the Panamerican highway.
Duration of the transfer to San Gerardo de Dota: 2 hours approximately

At Savegre Lodge, you find a place that can offer superlative birding. The birding here is so good that San Gerardo de Dota is the only destination in Costa Rica mentioned in the book: Fifty Places to Go Birding Before You Die: Experts Share the World's Greatest Destinations. Morning birdsong heralds the start of an unforgettable experience in the cloud forest.

Overnight at Savegre Lodge and Natural Reserve. (B& D)

Early morning birding tour.
The bird list in San Gerardo de Dota has more than 170 species and some are endemic to the zone. Along the trails, you will be able to find the most elusive and hard-to-spot species, real trophies if you want to increase your bird list.
The early morning birding tour consists of short walks around the hotel or in their private reserve. Mornings, just after dawn, are the best time for seeing most species.

The list of bird species that can be spotted in San Gerardo de Dora is gigantic, but some of the resident species are the Yellow-thighed Finch, the Blue-gray Tanager, the Blue-hooded Euphonia, the Collared Redstart and the Flame-throated Warbler.

At night, an amazing optional tour (not included in the price) can be enjoyed:

  • Cloud Forest Night tour
Recommended for birders or anyone who wants to experience the forest at night. This tour starts by searching for the Dusky Nightjar in the open ground by the hotel. Then, as the mysterious sounds of the night forest build up after sunset, your guide will help you look for various owl species.

Overnight at Savegre Lodge and Natural Reserve . (B, L & D)

Early morning birding tour.
Another amazing day to spot new birds and mark them in your check list…and if you are lucky, you will be able to spot the resplendent quetzal.
The beautiful quetzal can be found almost anywhere in the valley, often flies across the lodge's grounds looking for fruiting. The best time of the year to see the quetzal in this region is in dry season, from December to April.

Overnight at Savegre Lodge and Natural Reserve. . (B, L & D)

After breakfast, transfer to Turrialba Region.
Duration of the transfer: 3 hours and 30 minutes approximately

Turrialba is a rural community of Cartago (first capital of Costa Rica) with fertile lands, green pastures and amazing nature sceneries.

Overnight at Rancho Naturalista Hotel. (B, L & D)

Birding is a must in Turrialba, and even when these days are for leisure, we recommend you to take at least one birding tour in the area.
Because this is an area full of agricultural and mountainous landscapes, the Turrialba Valley is the perfect place for bird lovers. Some of the species that can be found here are the Snowcap, the Tawny-chested Flycatcher, the Purplish-backed Quail-Dove and the White-crowned Manakin.

Optional birding tours – not included in the price – can be arranged from Rancho Naturalista:

  • Birding in “La Mina”: Ever wanted to see a Sunbittern? La Mina probably offers your best chance in Costa Rica to see this bird, amongst Torrent Tyrannulet, American Dipper, migrant Waterthrushes and sometimes, good Tanager Flocks.

  • Birding in “Rio Tuis Valley”: You can hike the trail into the vast forest reserve (4113 ha) of the Zona Protectora Rio Tuis for just a few hours to an entire day. The birding is excellent all along! Great mixed tanager flocks and a variety of raptors are always present, while higher up you can find Azure-hooded Jays, and Spangle-cheeked Tanagers. It is also the most reliable locale in the country to try your luck for the enigmatic Lanceolated Monklet.

Overnight at Rancho Naturalista Hotel. (B, L & D)

An optional birding tour – not included in the price – in the CATIE is recommended during your stay in Turrialba:

  • Birding in the CATIE: Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza (C.A.T.I.E) offers a chance to see birds you definitely won’t see at Rancho Naturalista – aquatic birds such as Boat-billed Herons and Purple Gallinules make their home here. Watch for the “secretive” Green Ibises feeding in the open on the lawns!! The open setting is great for photography.

Overnight at Rancho Naturalista Hotel. (B, L & D)

After breakfast, transfer to Sarapiqui area.
Duration of the transfer: 3 hours approximately

La Selva was originally established in 1954 by Dr. Leslie Holdridge, as a farm dedicated to experimentation on mixed plantations for the improvement of natural resources management. It was purchased in 1968 by the Organization for Tropical Studies and declared a private biological reserve and station. Since then, it has become one of the most important sites in the world for research on tropical rain forest. La Selva is home to more than half of the 900 species of birds in Costa Rica.

Overnight at La Selva Biological Station. (B, L & D)
Private Birdwatching tour.
La Selva Station offers fantastic birding and excellent wildlife observation due to the fact that is surrounded by a great number of habitats including primary rainforest, secondary rainforest, rivers, creeks, and some areas in natural regeneration.
Some of the more fantastic species that can be spotted at La Selva Station include the Bare-necked Umbrella Bird, the Red-capped Manakin, the Great Antshrike, and the Rufous-tailed Jacamar.

Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the trails and looking for more and more species to add to your Costa Rica Bird list.

Overnight at La Selva Biological Station. (B, L & D)

After breakfast, start a road trip from Sarapiqui to San Jose.

Driving time: 2 hours and 30 minutes approximately

Depending on the time of your flight, a private departure transfer will be scheduled to take you to the Juan Santamaria International Airport.

You must be at the airport 3 hours prior the flight time . (B)
