Let’s talk about a classic Costa Rican breakfast

When rice and beans are mixed together, they acquire the name of “Gallo pinto”.  For lunch and dinner, they come side by side and are called just what they are, rice and beans, but they can also be served on a tortilla with other ingredients in what Costa Rican’s call a “gallo” or a side dish. The word gallomeans rooster and to be frank I have no idea why they call it that. Gallo pinto means tainted rooster.
A full breakfast includes gallo pinto, eggs, fried plantains and sour cream. It can also include cheese, ham, bacon, toasts and don’t be surprised if some locals add a steak on the side. Depending where you are from, all of this might simply shock you. Eating rice in the morning, when I first arrived to Costa Rica, was something strange for me, but I enjoyed it from the first time even when it was just something that my mind had difficulty accepting. Now, I absolutely adore it and I don’t miss a chance to enjoy it.
