Although there are Costa Rica vacation deals all over the country, one region that a tourist must plan to visit is the area of Limon. Limon is situated along the Caribbean coast and runs the entire coastline of Costa Rica, bordering with Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south.
Limon is quite distinct from the rest of Costa Rica, primarily in cultural aspects. The region has a significant Afro-Caribbean influence and also is home to the majority of Costa Rica’s indigenous population. In addition to the nation’s official language of Spanish, several other languages are spoken in Limon.
Limon is most famous for its Afro influence, as the most popular dishes include a Caribbean style “rice and beans” and the most popular music heard at clubs and bars in reggae and calypso.
Limon is home to beautiful beaches along the southern coast, a mountain range called the Cordillera de Talamanca, and the Tortuguero National Park to the north. As opposite the remainder of Costa Rica, Limon does not follow the wet-dry cycle of climate, as it rains year-round in Limon. However, the driest months and the best for vacationing are in September and October.
Formerly home to the United Fruit Company, banana and plantain exports are the largest source of money for the Limon economy in addition to the Port of Limon.
One great event to check out during your trip to Costa Rica is the carnaval in Limon, which runs along the same time as Columbus Day, or Dia de la Raza, as called in Costa Rica. Various activities take place, including music, dancing, parades, food and a large concert.
When planning your Costa Rica vacation, don’t forget about the area of Limon and the different experience it offers.
