A Central American sea Observatory was opened in the country under the name of the famous French oceanographer Jacques Ives Cousteau to protect marine and coastal ecosystems of the region. The project is very important because the country’s ecological diversity is worldwide recognized and it is the main attraction of eco-tours in Costa Rica, which generate thousands of visitors each year.
The agreement to create this entity was signed at the French Embassy, during a seminar attended by representatives from Central America and Costa Rica Government institutions and delegates from France and Mexico.
The sea ecosystems of the country, and the region support an important part of the tourism industry. Dozens of restaurants, beach hotels in Costa Rica, and a lot of other tourism business depend on good conditions of beaches, seas and coasts. In fact, most of Costa Rica travel packages offer to involve tourists in activities related to sea wildlife such as scuba diving, dolphins watching, and fishing tours, among others.
Precisely, the country coasts offer the most popular destinations for local and international tourism. Every year thousands visitors come for travel vacations to Tortuguero National Park, the most important place on the western Caribbean for the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) nesting . On the other hand, the Pacific Coast offers a variety of beautiful beaches, exotic landscapes, and exuberant forests especially for family travels and adventure tours.
There are many reasons to keep vigilance on the coasts and seas of Central America, so the Observatory "will contribute to solving current problems, which affect the marine and coastal ecosystems", said the Registry Office of Costa Rica University (UCR). In addition, among other objectives the entity will study the structure, function and biodiversity of marine and coastal ecosystems and climate change effects.
The explorer Jacques Cousteau developed a notable "sensitivity" towards marine wildlife, and positive awareness about the oceans value, and the dangers of natural resources abusing. That thinking must be maintained forever.
