If you are in the middle of a Costa Rica surfing trip, you must visit Nosara Beach. Another beautiful spot in Guanacaste, in the Pacific Coast, Nosara beach will welcome you with amazing natural beauty and a quiet and calmed environment. We continued our adventure trip in Costa Rica and went surfing to Nosara, and found a couple surprises that made our trip worth.
Nosara is located 35 miles southwest from Nicoya, and it’s a bit hard to reach since there are no paved roads. We took a short flight from Liberia, taking less that 15 minutes to get to the town of Nosara. You can also get here by car or even a bus from San Jose, but we decided to fly from Liberia since the airfare is accessible. You can contact your Costa Rica travel agency and ask for private transportation too.
Once in Nosara we rented a car to get to the beach, located at three miles from the small town. There are several rent-a-cars here, but booking in advance is recommended and you must be over 21 and have a valid driver’s license and credit card. A 4×4 vehicle is a must, since the roads to the beach are rustic. Rocks, dirt, mud and river crossings are part of the travel, but that actually adds to the fun of the trip. It’s like finding a secret place in the middle of nowhere. My advice is, buckle up, drive slowly and enjoy.
It all pays out when you finally get to the beach. It’s a small paradise on earth. The beach sits in a delta between two rivers and has mangrove swamps surrounded by mountains. It’s a perfect spot for surfing, and if you look for a more relaxed activity you can swim or fish. For the more adventurers, there’s the kayak in the close rivers, horse-riding and snorkeling in the Pacific Ocean. More than you can do in one day, so plan to stay longer, especially if you consider that the place is not as accessible as other beaches in Guanacaste.
We definitely enjoyed our stay in Nosara. We stayed at one of the Costa Rica hotels in the town, and there are villas, cabins and accommodation for every budget. I hope to be back soon.
