My Costa Rica vacations continues in the Southern Pacific of Puntarenas, in the area between Osa Peninsula and the Corcovado National Park, which are two of the most popular touristic attractions in Costa Rica. The last place that I visited was Costa Ballena (Whale Coast), a land and sea strip between Dominical and Ojachal, comprised of beautiful beaches and amazing cliffs with great wildlife.
Costa Ballena includes the following beaches: Dominical, Dominicalito, Hermosa, Uvita, Arco, Ballena, Pinuelas, Ventanas and Tortuga. As in other Pacific Ocean beaches, there are many touristic activities to practice, such as surfing trips, kayaking, diving, sports fishing, canopy, and tree-top hikes. These beaches are perfect for group tours and eco tours, due to their natural state and beauty, making them perfect for relaxing.
Its named Ballena after the massive whale migration that happens every year in front of the coast, and the existence of other marine species like dolphins. Whale watching tours in Costa Ballena are offered by Costa Rica tour operators, and the lush green forests surrounding the coast and the mangroves in Ojochal provide a perfect chance for birding tours.
There are also important archeological sites with pre-columbian stones, the Nauyaca waterfalls 6 miles from Costa Ballena, which you can get to in a horse back ride tour, and the Hacienda Baru Wildlife Refuge with long, secluded beaches. The Ballena Marine National Park is another tourist attraction in Puntarenas, created to preserve the marine ecosystem, coral reefs, and nesting for endangered species of turtles.
There are many Costa Rica hotels in the Costa Ballena area, ranging from cheap hotels to luxury resorts. To get to Dominical you can drive over the Costanera Highway from San Jose, go past Quepos for one hour and enter Dominical, drive all the way to Golfito and visit all the beaches and national parks. Or take a 45-minute flight to any of the local airports. The weather in Costa Ballena is warm and humid during all year, with heavy rains in the rainy season (May to mid-December).
