Cloud forest, cool mountain air, pastoral imagery and excellent bird-watching make San Gerardo de Dota one of Costa Rica's best destinations. San Gerardo is in southern Costa Rica, in a narrow valley of the Savegre River. You reach it by traveling down a 9 - kilometer dirt road that leaves the Inter-American highway. A number of private reserves protect primary forests and serve as home to the resplendent quetzal and woodpeckers. Many area families have taken advantage of the crisp weather to grow apples and plums. In the nearby Rio Savegre. Cool nights mean lodges in the area have heat.

Wheather: The gorgeous town of San Gerardo de Dota lies in one of the most beautiful regions of Costa Rica, on the rim of the Central Valley in the San José Province. Located just 85 km southwest of the capital city San José, this picturesque town lies near the Inter-American Highway on the western slopes of the Cerro de La Muerte. Sitting 3 hours away from San José, San Gerardo de Dota is easily accessible and is a wonderful place to take a day trip. It is the ideal base for those who want some rest and relaxation amid picturesque natural settings, while at the same time being close enough to the city. In the early morning, the cold mist in the shadowed valley will require some extra clothing and though the mornings normally are very sunny, the afternoons can experience some showers.

Atractions: Once in San Gerardo, there are horses for rent to visit the waterfall and undertake trips along some of the forest trails, ideal for birdwatching and reaching some of the more distant fishing pools. Hiking is the most popular activity since the trails are scenic and can be undertaken individually or with a guide in a group. At the lodges, there are maps indicating the trails with approximate walking time and hiking difficulty indicators.
An amazingly stunning habitat for a plethora of bird and flora species, this region is most well known for being the primary habitat for the resplendent Quetzal, Costa Rica?s most famous bird. Considered to be among the most striking birds in the world, the quetzals here nest in the nearby cloud forest and can be seen most of the year. However, they are most frequently spotted during the months of April and May, which is their breeding season. Besides the quetzal, a number of other birds found here include peccaries, tanagers, woodpeckers and hummingbirds making this area truly a birdwatchers haven.

Others: Driving to San Gerardo de Dota from San José is a three hour challenge on the Pan American highway. There is sometimes a lot of fog in the morning and evening with the road poorly marked in places where it is subject to many landslides and the remaining roadside not clearly visible.
