Central Valley Tours Description

Top

San Jose city tour:

This is an excellent opportunity to learn of the past and culture of Costa Rica. Visit different residential neighborhoods of the capital, parks, the heart of San Jose, the University of Costa Rica, and some of the government buildings. The tour includes a visit to the National Theater and to the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum. On sundays the visit to the theather switches for serpentarium. All fees are included.

The City Tour of San José, the country's capital, is the best way to begin a trip to Costa Rica .

San José is not a very colonial city, although the heart of the historic center features several beautiful old buildings. It didn't become a decent-sized city until relatively late in the 1800s, long past the colonial era, and had a modern building boom in the 1950s and 60s. Because of its economic success from coffee exports, San José became the second city in the Americas to install electricity (1884).

San José is a very cosmopolitan capital with many welcoming qualities. Near-perfect weather is a big attraction to visitors as well as expatriates who call the Central Valley home.

As the cultural heart of the nation, San José is home to several theater groups, excellent museums, parks, a national symphony, cinemas and universities. It is also host to nightclubs, casinos, discos and fine restaurants.

The city's population is approximately 278,000, and along with the population of surrounding suburbs of close to 885,000, greater San Jose represents 37% of the nation's total population. Residents of San José are known as Josefinos.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn of the past and culture of Costa Rica . This half day tour of San Jose , introduces you to the architecture, culture and customs of costarricans.

Places to visit in the San José City Tour:

  • Metropolitan Park of La Sabana lung of the Capital City
  • The National Theater: Inaugurated on October 19, 1897 with a performance of "Faust" by the Paris Opera Company, the building's origins date to 1890 when the Italian opera singer, Angela Pelati, gave a number of performances in Guatemala but refused to come to Costa Rica due to the lack of a proper theater. The members of the country's coffee elite proposed that a theater be built in San Jos é to correct this situation and agreed to contribute five centavos per exported sack of coffee to finance the construction.
  • Gold Museum
  • The National Museum: Best known for the variety of pre-Columbian artifacts on permanent display, the National Museum also has exhibits dedicated to Costa Rican religious art and the history of the country since the Spanish conquest.
  • The Supreme Court
  • The National Park
  • National Library
  • The University of Costa Rica
