The Savegre Mountain Hotel, also known as Cabinas Chacón, is located in San Gerardo de Dota, a small community in the Talamanca mountains in the midst of a precious ecosystem... Here you will find a deep cloud forest filled with massive oaks and other native species. The woods serve as a sanctuary for a large number of mammals and innumerable species of insects, amphibians, amazing plants and colorful birds, a paradise for birdwatchers.
As you wind around Cerro de la Muerte on the Interamerican Highway, you will see the lush vegetation become stunted and then diminish. The turn off for San Gerardo de Dota is on Kilometer 80, driving for 9 kilometers down on a well mantained gravel road you reach this narrow, pristine mountain valley at 2200 meters of altitude (7220 ft). San Gerardo de Dota has become a paradise for birdwatchers, hikers, and trout fishers.
Don Chacón and his family arrived here in 1954 and were the first pioneers settling down in this valley. The Chac?n Family not only have developed this wonderul hotel, but have over the course of the years take advantage of the crisp weather to grow apples, plums, and peaches, which you sample in meals. Rainbow trout abound in the Savegre River which is great for fly fishing. Over 170 bird species have been observed in the area and its multiple hiking trails in the Cloud Forest. This is known as one of the best places in the country to observe quetzals, who live here year around The Hotel hosts the Quetzal Education Research Center Complex (QERC), a cooperative venture between the Chac?n Family and Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma.

Here the guests will find a deep cloud forest filled with massive oaks and other native species. The property features rooms in two categories: 24 cozy standard rooms surrounded by beautiful, lush gardens and 17 junior suites. The rooms offer terrace, telephone, coffee maker, bathroom with bathtub and hair dryer. The hotel features a restaurant, bar, souvenir shop, laundry service, internet access and conference room. Guests can choose between plenty of activities from river fishing and horseback riding to birdwatching.

How to get thereUsing the city of San Jos? as a reference point, take the Florencio del Castillo Highway to the Southern Interamerican Highway, Route 2. From there, enjoy the great climate as you drive through the beautiful high mountains of fog-shrouded Cerro de La Muerte, highest pass on the Interamerican Highway, until you reach kilometer 80, where you take a detour to the right for 9 kilometers on well-maintained country road, finally reaching the slopes of the Savegre River - your tranquil destination.
Tavelling by bus:
Take a San Isidro Bus, either from San Jos? or San Isidro de El General, and ask to be left at Kilometer 80 in the entrance to San Gerardo ("Entrada a San Gerardo de Dota"). San Gerardo de Dota is 9 Kilometers downhill from there. When you reserve please let us know that you are going to need transportation from the main highway, we will be there to pick you up. The cost for picking you up and taking you back to the entrance will be US$10 each way, maximun 5 people.
It is important to be at the Stations at least two hours in advance to get your tickets, although it is much better to buy them the day before.
Where do you take the bus?
If you are in San Isidro de El General you can take the buses from MUSOC, the station is located 3 blocks away from the Central Park.
If you are in San Jos? you will need to go to the MUSOC Bus Station in Downtown San Jos?, it is located on Central Street, 22nd Avenue; in front of Maternidad Carit. It is easier to just take a taxi there.
