General Description

The hotel is situated along the border between the Tropical and Dry Pacific eco-systems. This unique location allows the guests to observe over 400 species of birds as well as exotic animals, such as the poison dart frog, deer, jaguar, wild pigs, bats, raccoons, anteaters, lizards and several types of monkeys (spider monkey and congo) and other jungle creatures. All this at a mere 90 minutes away (by road) from San José and the Juan Santamaría International Airport. Villa Lapas's private natural reserve limits with that of Carara Biological Reserve, one of the biggest protected areas in the Costa Rican Pacific, featuring one of the few remaining populations of Scarlet Macaws in the country, and with the Tárcoles River, home of many crocodiles that can be easily seen from the river bridge, and its a favorite birdwatching spot as well. The SkyWay Tour

A Villa Lapas exclusive! Experience the raw power of the rainforest through our SkyWay walking tour. Of 1.5 miles (2.5 km) in length, this all-ages tour lets you observe a wide array of exotic flora, fauna and wildlife firsthand. Make yourself one with the jungle!

Canopy Tour

An adrenaline-filled encounter with the rainforest, at 1000 feet above the ground! Fly over exotic trees and flora and see birds, monkeys and other exotic animals firsthand, while experiencing the energy rush of “zipping” from one treetop to another within the vast Villa Lapas private reserve.

Birdwatching Tours

With over 400 bird species to watch at Villa Lapas, no doubt this is a birdwatcher's paradise. Birdwatching aficionados and pros from all over the world confirm this fact. There is plenty for the passionate birdwatcher to look for at Villa Lapas, including the beautiful and greatly endangered Scarlet Macaw, the yellow-billed Cotinga, and the Black-hooded Antshrike among many others.

How to get there

From San José (Juan Santamaría) Airport:

Take the Bernardo Soto Highway to the west through the "Cruce Manolos" (Intersection). Turn right at this point, following the signs to Jacó/Quepos. Continue through passing Atenas and Orotina towns. From Orotina, head south to the Coastal Highway, following signs to Jacó (about 45 km / 28 mi). Entrance to Hotel Villa Lapas is located past the Tárcoles and Quebrada Ganado towns on the left side, about 30 km / 18 mi from Orotina (signs provided).

From Caldera Port (Puntarenas):

Follow Coastal Highway southeast toward Orotina. Before Orotina, head south to Herradura, following signs to Jacó.Entrance to Hotel Villa Lapas is located past the Tárcoles and Quebrada Ganado towns on the left side, about 30 km / 18 mi from Orotina (signs provided).
