Costa Rica Canopy

This is the best way to view Costa Rica's Rain Forests. Guests traverse from tree to tree and platform to platform using pulleys on horizontal traverse cables, as they sail through the treetops of the tropical rainforest canopy, and over the trails far below. Expert guides assist you in this exciting journey through the different layers of the virgin rain forests and explain whats going on around you, from the time you leave the ground, until you rappel back down to the forest floor.

Canopy Costa Rica

Canopy

First of all these tours is a lot of fun and can complement well a day spent hiking in the cloud forest. We say complement, as this is not the same experience as taking a walk through one of the reserves. While this tour does offer an opportunity to view nature and provides a new perspective, that is altitude, the tours main focus is a little adrenaline and fun. That is why we also suggest going for an early morning hike and experiencing the quite and magic of the cloud forest with a little more calm. That said these tours are very popular and Monteverde offers the best selection and quality for this type of tour.

A Canopy Tour consists of suspension cables on which the person will travel from platform to platform while enjoying the beauty of the forest canopy. These cables are specially designed by expert engineers, who have made it one of the safest and most thrilling adventures available for tourists in Costa Rica . Clients are equipped with high-tech harnesses to ensure their safety.

Be especially sure that you feel comfortable and confident with the safety standards, guides, and equipment before embarking.

Monteverde canopy tours: they will take your through each of the cables and platforms and optionally through different swings. They have one of the longest if not the longest Canopy Tour in Costa Rica , great suspension bridges and rappels that is truly in the canopy. Also it is the only one located inside the actual virgin cloud forest of Monteverde.

If you are looking for extreme adventures and amazing rides, this is a good choice. The Tours usually takes between 1.5 and 3 hours and may be completed by people ranging between the age of 4 and 99. It is safe for all people although some restrictions may apply.

Some of the canopy tours around the country are:

  • Mundo Aventura - Located in the Arenal area.
  • Canopy - Located in the Quepos/Manuel Antonio area.
  • Selvatura - Located in the Monteverde Cloud Forest
  • The Original Canopy Tour - Located near San Mateo on the way to coast.

Canopy tours first became popular in Costa Rica during the mid 90's and have, since then, spread all over the country, from the Monteverde Cloud Forest to the Arenal Volcano, and to many other parts of the world.

Costa Rica canopy tours are an exhilarating way to experience the plants and animals of the Costa Rica rain forest, such as monkeys, tree frogs, vine snakes, sloths and hundreds of bird species.

Recommendations

Wear comfortable clothing as well as comfortable and closed shoes. During the rainy season, lightweight raincoat is recommended.

It is recommended to travel as light as possible. For security reasons, it is allowed to bring small cameras only.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest is the place in Costa Rica where visitors come to experience the unique environment.

Sky Trek is a system of trails, suspension bridges, and zip lines that offers visitors the opportunity to observe, and appreciate tropical vegetation from different vantage points, above the canopy.

Sky Trek offers a total stretch of 2 kilometers of cables.

Two suspended bridges in, and above the canopy, one of 80 meters long (265 feet), and one of 60 meters. Three platforms above the canopy, connected by zip lines. A canopy observation tower, 22 meters high ( 8 story or 72 feet). 10 cables system, the longest is 427 meters long (1,400 feet), and 127 meters high (417 feet).

Poas Canopy Tour

The Poas Canopy Tour is the most popular adventure tour in the mountain.

With 24 platforms in the major trees, an extraordinary trail has been designed above the canopy forest.

The tour, of approximately two hours, in which the visitor performs a journey through the treetops on fourteen cables suspended high above the jungle trails, with the help and under the supervision of highly qualified and professional personnel.

This exciting adventure ends when you glide down on an impressive 1980-feet length cable.

The Original Canopy Tour in San Mateo

This brand new location is perfectly situated near the town of San Mateo , about 1 1/2 hour from San Jose or 1 hour from Jaco.

The climate in this area is very warm and usually humid. Due to hot climate, clients are recommended to wear shorts and a t-shirt and to bring a change of clothing, as they will get sweaty or wet from the rain.

The tour consists of 10 platforms, 7 horizontal traverses and a rappel. The tour starts on a hill top where the first platform is located. From there you traverse to the second and third platforms in an "espavel" tree, which is a member of the cashew family. You will rappel or be belayed down to the third platform where the journey will continue to the other platforms. The Canopy Tour follows a small stream and wildlife sightings are very common in this area. Often we can see white-faced capuchin, howler monkeys from the platforms, also many varieties of birds and mahogany trees in abundance. The last traverse goes to a ground platform at the edge of the valley.

There are restroom facilities but no restaurant here. We recommend you bring insect repellant, water, a camera and binoculars. The tour lasts 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

Arenal Canopy Tour

Their new course is designed to the safety standards of the ACCT and regularly inspected and approved by the ICT.

Smaller groups, personal attention and the option of a 40 minute horseback ride to the site distinguish this five platform zip & rappel tour through the primary forest canopy.

Hacienda Barú

Flight of the Toucan

On this tour, 8 separate cable rides take you from one ridge top to another, across valleys and streams. There are 14 land based platforms and 1 tree platform with a view of the coast. This is a great way to see and learn about the forest and have lots of fun at the same time.
